Throughout history the ideal of beautiful has been difficult to achieve it has been shaped by social contexts. From in early age people have been surrounded by images and advertisement that reinforced that thin is beautiful and in order to be happy and successful one must be thin. Women are consistently given the message they are not pretty enough or thin enough. It is nearly impossible to open a magazine, shop at the mall or turn on the TV without being confronted with the message that to be fat is to be undesirable and unattractive. This has left us with a society full of girls with eating disorders, low confidence and depression. â€Å"Miss Representation† is a documentary that is directed and produced by Jennifer Siebel. She discusses†¦show more content†¦Bulimia nervosa is binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors just as purging, fasting and even over exercising. Binge eating is more common than anorexia and bulimia it is characterized as compulsive overe ating. Eating disorders are serious health conditions that can be both physically and emotionally destructive. Many adolescents feel under pressure to look a certain way and when their breast, weight or hips don’t match up to those of a supermodels and actors they feel fatally flawed. But celebrities are no less susceptible to eating disorders than the rest of the population. Mary-Kate Olsen was hospitalized with anorexia nervosa. There is also Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie who we hear about through gossip magazines that often struggle with eating disorders. Many girls don’t understand that you can’t be what you see all the time and they began to criticize themselves for not looking like their roles models on TV and magazines. It’s important to restrict the amount of hours you spend reading magazines and watching TV and promote more active activities in your daily life and practice healthy eating. Women need to be supportive of another instead of judgin g or comparing others. It’s important to value the unique and different qualities that people offer us.
